Te mapa
Tōno lies in a basin in the Kitakami highlands of Iwate prefecture, with mountains on every side. The map shows a clear division. The flat valley floor holds the town, rice fields and roads. The wooded slopes around it are mostly empty. Rivers flow across the basin and give the lowland its shape.
The town is best known through Tōno Monogatari, the collection of local legends that Kunio Yanagita published in 1910, one of the founding works of Japanese folklore studies. Kappa, mountain spirits and old farmhouses from those stories are still part of how the town presents itself. The JR Kamaishi Line crosses the basin on its way to the Pacific coast.
A Tōno map poster suits a place where landscape and story are closely tied. The compact town centre, the long lines of the rivers, the small field grid and the rising contours of the surrounding hills all fit on one sheet. The basin reads as an enclosed, self-contained world, much as it does in the tales.
The flat valley floor is surrounded by mountains. On the poster, dense town streets and fields in the middle contrast with nearly empty slopes at the edges.
Rivers flow across the basin, with rice fields laid out along them. The paddies form a fine pattern of small plots between the water and the town.
The JR Kamaishi Line crosses the basin toward the coast. It draws a long, gently curving line through the town and the fields.

Koteā ko Tōno
Tōno attracts readers of Yanagita, folklore enthusiasts and travellers looking for rural Japan, and it is also home for its residents. A map of the basin is a quiet reminder of a trip, a book or a family history.
Add your own title, subtitle and coordinates, for example the date of a visit or a line from the tales, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. HD files cost $9, and printed posters are also available.
