Te mapa
Torres Vedras is about fifty kilometres north of Lisbon, in the rolling farmland of the Oeste region. The old town gathers below a hill topped by the remains of a medieval castle. Its streets curve around the slope and then spread into newer districts on the valley floor. The Sizandro River runs past the town toward the coast a short distance to the west.
The name is known well beyond Portugal because of the Lines of Torres Vedras, a chain of forts and earthworks built in 1809 and 1810 on Wellington's orders to protect Lisbon from Napoleon's armies. Hilltop forts from the lines survive around the area. On a Torres Vedras map poster the surrounding heights show why this landscape was chosen for defence.
In Portugal the town is also famous for its carnival, one of the largest and most irreverent in the country, when costumes and satirical floats fill the old streets. On the map, the compact historic centre contrasts with the ring roads, the railway along the valley, and the vineyards and orchards that surround the town on every side.
The castle and the church beside it crown the rise above the old town. The streets below wind around the slope in curves that stand out against the straighter modern roads.
The river follows a green corridor past the town, joined by the railway and main roads. Together they form a natural axis that leads the eye toward the Atlantic coast.
Forts of the Lines of Torres Vedras once stood on the rounded heights around the town. The roads that run between these hills give the outskirts a winding, irregular pattern.
