Towada Map Poster & Print
Towada is a city in Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan. Its urban centre, on the Sanbongi plain, is unusual for Japan: it was laid out as a regular grid when the land was developed from the mid-nineteenth century onward, after irrigation canals brought water to what had been dry upland. On a map the centre reads as a neat rectangle of streets.
The main avenue, Kanchōgai-dōri, is lined with pine and cherry trees and holds the Towada Art Center, whose separate white gallery buildings and outdoor sculptures have become a draw for visitors. The municipality also reaches west into the mountains, including Lake Towada and the Oirase Stream, well known for their autumn colour.
