Te mapa
Tsukawaki lies in the mountainous interior of Oita Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu. It is part of an area of high valleys and volcanic uplands, and on the map the settlement follows the shape of the land: houses, roads and fields gather on the valley floor, while the slopes around them are drawn as open, forested space.
The layout is long and narrow, with streets running parallel to the river and the main routes through the valley. Small rice fields fill the flatter ground, and side roads climb into the hills toward smaller hamlets. The wider region is known for its hot springs and mountain scenery.
A Tsukawaki map poster shows how closely the settlement follows the terrain. The narrow band of streets between large, quiet areas of forest gives a clear and calming composition, and it works particularly well in a portrait format that follows the direction of the valley.
Streets, homes and fields line the valley bottom, forming a slender band that follows the course of the river.
The hills on either side are largely wooded, leaving broad open areas on the map around the settlement.
Small roads wind up from the valley toward outlying hamlets, adding thin, curving lines to the design.

This map is a quiet reminder of the Kyushu mountains, for those who grew up in the valley or who travelled through Oita's hot-spring country. Its restrained shapes suit Japanese-inspired and minimal interiors.
