Tufānganj is a town in Cooch Behar district, in the northern part of West Bengal. It lies on the flat plains below the Himalayan foothills, close to the border with Assam. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets near the Raidak river, with markets and residential areas giving way quickly to fields and villages.
The Raidak is one of several rivers that flow down from Bhutan across this plain, and its channel, with sandbars and side streams, is a strong feature on the map. The countryside around the town is densely farmed, with paddy fields, ponds and tree-lined villages spread across the level ground.
