Te mapa
Tutuila is the main island of American Samoa, a thin ridge of volcanic mountains rising steeply from the Pacific. From above it runs roughly east to west. The north side has rugged slopes and few roads, and most villages are strung along the southern coast. There the main road follows the shore from one bay to the next, bending around each headland.
At the centre of the island, Pago Pago Harbor reaches deep inland from the south between steep ridges. It is one of the finest natural harbours in the South Pacific. The villages around it, including the seat of government at Fagatogo, form the densest part of a Tutuila map poster, squeezed between the water and the steep slopes above.
Above the harbour stands Mount Pioa, nicknamed Rainmaker Mountain for the clouds that gather on it and the heavy rain it draws. Much of the north coast lies within the National Park of American Samoa, the only US national park south of the equator. The park protects rainforest, coral reef and cliffs that drop straight into the sea.

Mount Pioa rises right above the harbour. Its steep contours crowd close to the water, and its habit of catching rain clouds gave it its nickname.
The main road follows the south shore around headlands and small bays, linking villages from end to end. On paper it becomes one long line that traces the coastline.

Koteā ko Tutuila
Tutuila hangs in the homes of Samoan families across the United States and the Pacific, of teachers and service members who lived there, and of travellers who arrived by ship. It is a map of belonging as much as of landscape, and its shape is unmistakable.
Add a village name, a family name or a date to the title and subtitle, and adjust the coordinates line. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Then download the $9 HD files or order a framed print.
