Te mapa
Upolu is the second largest island of Samoa and home to most of its population. It stretches from east to west in a long, slightly curved shape, and a volcanic spine of forested hills runs down the middle. A coastal road circles almost the entire island, and a pale band of reef and lagoon follows much of the shoreline just offshore.
Apia, the capital of Samoa, curves around a harbour on the north coast. It is the only real urban area, and its streets stand out clearly against the villages that line the rest of the coast. Several roads climb from the north to cross the central ridge. An Upolu map poster shows this simple structure: a coastal ring, a few crossings and a quiet interior.
In the hills above Apia stands Vailima, the house where the writer Robert Louis Stevenson spent his last years. It is now a museum. On the south coast, To Sua, a deep swimming hole connected to the sea, is one of the island's best-known sights.
The capital follows a curved bay on the north coast. Its compact street pattern is the densest part of the island.
A single road loops around most of the island. It links the villages in a continuous line just inside the shore.
Much of the coast is edged by shallow lagoons and reef. This creates a second, softer outline around the island.

Koteā ko Upolu
Upolu is a natural choice for Samoans at home and overseas, and for travellers who have stayed on its beaches. The long shape sits well in a landscape frame, above a sofa or a desk.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be personalised, for example with a village name or a family date. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint shows the lagoon line especially clearly.
