Te mapa
Tysons, in Fairfax County, Virginia, is one of the best-known examples of an American edge city: a large business and shopping district that grew around highway junctions rather than an old town centre. On the map, the Capital Beltway (I-495) runs down the west side, and Route 7 and Route 123 cross nearby, forming a tangle of ramps and interchanges.
Between these roads are large blocks of office towers, hotels and car parks, along with two major shopping centres, Tysons Corner Center and Tysons Galleria. Since the Metro Silver Line opened in 2014, with four stations in the area, the district has been gradually turning into a denser, more walkable place, and new street grids are being added between the old superblocks.
A Tysons map poster shows an unusual kind of urban form: large blocks, curved ramps and new street grids fitted together. Around the edges, the curving residential streets of McLean and Vienna fill in the rest of the frame, giving a clear view of how Tysons fits into the suburbs of Northern Virginia.
The Capital Beltway, Route 7 and Route 123 meet near Tysons, and their ramps and interchanges form the most complex lines on the map.
Four Metro stations along the Silver Line run through the district, and new, denser development is gathering around them.
Tysons Corner Center and Tysons Galleria occupy large blocks near the heart of the district, surrounded by office towers and car parks.
