Te mapa
Ukiha is a city in the south-east of Fukuoka Prefecture in Kyushu. It lies on the southern bank of the Chikugo River, at the foot of the Minō mountains. It is known for fruit growing, with orchards producing persimmons, grapes and pears, and for the Yoshii district, a historic street lined with white-plastered storehouses built by prosperous merchants.
The map shows two different landscapes side by side. To the north, the flat river plain is covered in fields and orchards, crossed by roads and irrigation channels and edged by the broad Chikugo River. To the south, the land rises steeply into the mountains, where roads switch back and forth and terraced rice fields step up the slopes. The old town sits along the road running east to west between the two.
An Ukiha map poster captures the moment where river plain meets mountain. It suits visitors who explored the white-walled streets or the terraces, and people with roots in rural Fukuoka who remember the orchards in season.
Kyushu's largest river flows along the north side of the city, and its wide, gently curving channel forms the northern boundary of the composition.
The historic merchant district is lined with white-walled storehouses along the old road, set in a narrow, linear pattern on the map.
South of the plain, the Minō mountains rise with winding roads and terraced fields, adding dense contour-like detail to the poster's lower half.
