Universidade Rural takes its name from the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, whose main campus lies in Seropédica, west of the city of Rio de Janeiro. From above, the campus is a large, open landscape of lawns, trees, fields and institutional buildings, organised around a monumental main building and a network of internal roads.
Founded as an agricultural school, the university still has extensive fields and research areas, and they give the map large areas of open ground. The old road between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo passes through the area, and residential streets have grown around the campus as students and staff settled nearby.
