Te mapa
Valentia Island lies off the southwestern coast of Ireland, at the edge of the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry. From above it is long and uneven, with steep cliffs on its Atlantic side, gentler slopes and fields facing the mainland and a harbour on its northeastern shore. A bridge connects it to the mainland at Portmagee, and a seasonal car ferry crosses from Renard Point to Knightstown.
Knightstown, the island's main village, has a small grid of streets laid out in the nineteenth century beside the harbour. From there roads climb across the island to Geokaun Mountain, whose summit looks out over the Skelligs and Dingle Bay, and to the old slate quarry. Fields and stone walls cover much of the land in between.
Valentia is best known as the eastern end of the first transatlantic telegraph cable, which connected Ireland with Newfoundland in the mid-nineteenth century. On its north coast, a set of fossil footprints left by an early four-legged animal is among the oldest found anywhere. A Valentia Island map poster captures the cliffs, the harbour and the bridge that tie it to Kerry.
