Te mapa
Vallenar is in Chile's Atacama Region, in the valley of the Huasco River. The contrast is sharp. On either side are dry hills and desert, while along the river a band of farmland follows the water. The town fills that valley floor, and its streets run between the riverbank and the slopes that close in to the north and south.
The name has an unusual origin. Ambrosio O'Higgins, the Irish-born colonial governor, founded the town in the late eighteenth century and named it after Ballinasloe, his home area in Ireland, in a Spanish rendering. The historic centre keeps the colonial-style grid around a central plaza, and newer neighbourhoods climb the valley sides.
The Huasco valley grows grapes for pisco and olives, and in rainy years the surrounding desert can burst into bloom during the desierto florido. A Vallenar map poster records the valley at street level: a rectangular core, a river running through, and roads heading out toward the coast and up into the Andes. That structure fits a single elongated frame well.
The river cuts the town lengthwise and traces a long curving line that holds the whole map together, marking the only reliable water in a very dry landscape.
The historic centre is laid out in regular blocks around a main square, a clear geometric core compared with the valley's winding edges.
Bare hills rise on both sides of the valley, and the built-up area stops against them, leaving open paper that emphasises the town's narrow shape.

Koteā ko Vallenar
Vallenar makes sense to anyone who knows the Atacama, the Huasco valley or the mines and farms around it. The map shows a town shaped by one river in one of the driest places on earth.
