Te mapa
Valparaíso is Chile's historic port, set around a broad bay on the Pacific. Its map has two very different parts. Along the water lies El Plan, a thin band of level ground, much of it reclaimed from the sea, where straight streets run parallel to the shore. Behind it rise the cerros, an arc of steep hills where streets zigzag, split and climb in every direction.
The hills are linked to the port below by funicular lifts known as ascensores, several of them more than a century old, and by countless stairways and passages. The historic quarter was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, and the city is also the seat of Chile's National Congress, which has met here since 1990.
A Valparaíso map poster is one of the most expressive city portraits in black and white. The flat grid of El Plan reads as a tight band along the bay, the quebradas between the hills show as deep folds in the street pattern, and the upper neighbourhoods scatter across the slopes like handwriting. It rewards being hung at a size large enough to explore.
The low, flat part of the city along the bay holds the port, the commercial streets and the main squares. On the map it forms a straight, dense strip hemmed between water and hills.
Behind the flat, dozens of hills rise steeply, separated by ravines. Streets follow contours and ridges, producing curling, irregular patterns that contrast sharply with the grid below.
Short funicular lines climb directly up the slopes from El Plan to the hilltop neighbourhoods. Together with stairways and passages, they are what make this vertical city walkable.

Koteā ko Valparaíso
Valparaíso is a city people fall for: students, sailors, painters and travellers who spent days climbing its hills. Its street pattern is so distinctive that the map works almost as abstract art, while still letting you trace the route to a favourite cerro or viewpoint.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be personalised, so you might name a hill, a house or the year you arrived. Select one of five styles, perhaps Sand or Blueprint for the coast, and download six print sizes for $9 or order a matte print, framed or unframed.
