Te mapa
Vanua Levu is the second-largest island in Fiji, north of Viti Levu. From above it is a long, irregular landmass that runs roughly southwest to northeast. A mountainous spine runs down its length, and the coastline is broken by bays, estuaries and offshore reefs.
Its most striking feature is Natewa Bay, a very large bay on the eastern side that nearly cuts off the Cakaudrove Peninsula from the rest of the island. The main towns sit on opposite coasts: Labasa on the northern plain among sugar-cane fields, and Savusavu on a sheltered southern bay popular with yachts.
The north is drier and more agricultural, while the southern and eastern slopes are wetter and more forested. A Vanua Levu map poster captures the island's long reach, the wide bite of Natewa Bay and the scattered roads that link its two coasts.
A vast bay opens into the eastern side of the island and nearly separates a long peninsula. It is the island's defining shape on any map.
The northern town sits on a flat coastal plain surrounded by cane fields and rivers, the island's main agricultural area.
On the south coast, Savusavu lies beside a protected bay. Its small town grid faces the water and sheltered anchorages.

Vanua Levu is home, a family origin or a long-remembered voyage for many people. A map of it holds that connection in one distinctive outline. The long, curving form fills a wide frame well.
