Vyksa grew around ironworks founded in the eighteenth century by the Batashev brothers, industrialists who built a network of works in this forested area. Water powered the mills, and the ponds created then still shape the town. On the map they are long, irregular bodies of water set among the streets.
Metallurgy is still central to Vyksa today, and a large steel works occupies a prominent part of the town. Around the built-up area, dense forest covers most of the surroundings. It gives the map a clear boundary and a strong contrast between the settled centre and the woodland beyond.
