Te mapa
Wailuku is the county seat of Maui and sits where the West Maui Mountains meet the island's central isthmus. On a map the town has a clear direction. Streets rise gently from the lowland toward the mountains and stop where the slopes become too steep. The road through Iao Valley continues inland into the mountains.
The town centre is compact and older than much of Maui's built-up land. It has a small commercial core, government buildings and churches along a few main streets. Around it, residential lanes spread across the lower slopes. To the east, Wailuku merges with Kahului, and together they form the island's main urban area on the isthmus.
Iao Valley is known for the Iao Needle, a green rock spire, and as the site of the Battle of Kepaniwai in 1790, part of Kamehameha I's campaign to unify the islands. A Wailuku map poster shows the meeting of town and mountain very clearly. The street lines are dense on one side, and the valley opens up on the other.
A single road leaves the town and follows the stream into the deep valley. It is a thin line leading from the dense streets into empty mountain ground.
The old centre has a tight cluster of main streets with civic buildings and churches. It is the densest part of the map and draws the eye first.
To the east the land flattens toward Kahului and the sea. Streets become more spread out there and the grid more open.

Koteā ko Wailuku
Wailuku is where many Maui families have deep roots and where much of the island's civic life takes place. The map shows the town in its true setting, against the mountains, which makes it a strong print for residents and for anyone who has spent time on the island.
You can set the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with an island name or a date. Then choose one of five styles. Noir makes the valley stand out especially well, and Paper and Sand keep the composition light.
