Te mapa
Waisai stretches along the southern shore of Waigeo, the largest island in Raja Ampat, off the western tip of New Guinea. On a map it is a narrow coastal strip. A few roads run parallel to the sea, and the rest of the frame is dark forested interior on one side and open water scattered with small islands on the other.
The town is the administrative seat of the Raja Ampat Regency and the main gateway for visitors to a marine area known for having among the highest diversity of coral reef life in the world. Ferries from Sorong arrive at its harbour, and many trips to the surrounding islands start here.
A Waisai map poster is mostly about the coastline. The irregular shore, the small bays and the offshore islets make a detailed edge. Behind it, the town's short streets and the harbour look almost fragile against the scale of the sea around them.
The town follows the island's southern coast, and its irregular edge of bays and headlands makes the strongest line on the map.
The harbour connects Waisai with Sorong on the mainland and serves as the starting point for boat trips across Raja Ampat.
Small islands dot the water offshore and appear as clusters of shapes in the open sea on the poster.
