Waukee lies on the western edge of the Des Moines metropolitan area in central Iowa. From above, it has a small historic core laid out in a simple grid near the old railroad, surrounded by much larger areas of newer subdivisions with curving streets, cul-de-sacs and ponds. The town has grown quickly in recent decades, and the map shows those layers clearly.
The Raccoon River Valley Trail, built on a former rail line, passes through Waukee and forms a long, straight line through town. Around the edges, farmland still meets new development, and wide arterial roads mark out a large mile-grid across the landscape.
