Waw lies in Myanmar's Bago Region, on the low, level country east of Bago. The land is almost perfectly flat, and water shapes much of it. Canals and streams cross the area, and rice paddies spread out in every direction. From above, the town's streets form a small, concentrated cluster in a wide agricultural landscape.
In a setting like this, the lines of water and roads carry the map. Waterways run in long, gentle strokes, and roads follow the higher, drier ground between them. The town sits where these routes meet, and its grain is compact and uneven, typical of a market town serving the farmland around it.
