Te mapa
Wenjī, also written Wonji, lies in the Oromia region of Ethiopia near the Awash River, south of the city of Adama. It sits in the Great Rift Valley, on a broad, fairly flat floor that has been shaped by irrigation. From above, the most striking thing is the order of the fields. Large rectangular cane blocks are divided by canals and service roads, laid out with near-perfect regularity.
The town is known for sugar. Ethiopia's first large sugar estate was established here in the mid-twentieth century, and the Wonji sugar works remain closely tied to the town's identity. Housing for estate workers, the factory site and the market centre form clusters within the farmed landscape rather than one continuous town.
A Wenjī map poster shows an unusual mix. There is a meandering river and the reservoir waters of the Koka area upstream, and next to them the straight geometry of planned irrigation. The Awash bends freely through the valley while the fields keep to their grid. For anyone connected to the estate or the region, that contrast is recognisable at a glance.
Irrigated sugarcane blocks cover the land in large rectangles. The canals and access roads between them form a regular pattern that reads like a drafted plan.
The river curves through the valley near the estate and supplies its irrigation. Its loops are the only freely drawn line in an otherwise geometric landscape.
The factory, worker housing and the town centre sit apart from each other within the fields. They appear as small dense islands among the open farmland.

Koteā ko Wenjī
Wenjī means something specific to the many people whose families worked the estate or grew up among the cane. A map turns that shared place into a clean graphic piece that suits a home or an office.
Write your own title and subtitle, for example Wonji with a year, and adjust the coordinates line. Choose one of five styles. Blueprint works especially well with the canal grid. Download the $9 HD files or order a printed poster.
