Werl lies in the Soest district of North Rhine-Westphalia, on the Hellweg, the old east–west trade route that ran along the southern edge of the Westphalian lowland. The town grew prosperous on salt, drawn from brine springs that were worked here for centuries, and like other Hellweg towns it developed a compact historic core of markets, churches and closely packed streets.
Werl is best known today as a Marian pilgrimage destination. Its pilgrimage basilica houses a venerated image of the Virgin Mary that has drawn visitors since the seventeenth century, and the town still welcomes large numbers of pilgrims each year. On a map the old town appears as a dense cluster, with later residential districts spreading outward in looser, more regular patterns.
Around the edges, flat and fertile farmland and the motorway links toward the Ruhr and the Sauerland give the composition a wider frame. A Werl map poster shows how a salt and pilgrimage town sits within a modern network of roads and rail, all reduced to clean lines that make the historic centre stand out clearly.

The basilica and the churches of the centre sit within the old town, the destination of processions that have made Werl a place of pilgrimage for more than three centuries.
The historic trade route across Westphalia survives in the east–west roads through town, a reminder of the salt trade that first made Werl important.
