Werne lies on the River Lippe at the southern edge of the Münsterland, where the farmland of Westphalia meets the northern fringe of the Ruhr area. On the map, the town is centred on a small, dense old core of irregular streets around the church and market square, surrounded by rings of later residential development.
The Lippe runs just south of the centre, together with the Datteln-Hamm Canal, which follows a straighter course alongside it, giving the southern part of the map two parallel water lines. Werne is known regionally for Sim-Jü, a large traditional fair held each autumn, and for its brine spa, which recalls the town's long connection with salt water.
