Westminster lies on the flat coastal plain of Orange County, a few miles inland from the Pacific. The ground is almost level, and the map shows it: long straight boulevards at regular intervals form a large grid, and residential tracts fill in the squares with shorter streets and curving lanes. A freeway crosses the city diagonally.
Westminster is best known as the heart of Little Saigon, the largest Vietnamese community outside Vietnam. It formed here from the late 1970s onward. Shops, restaurants and markets line the main commercial boulevards, and on the map these corridors form a clear band of larger lots running through the city.
Between the boulevards, the neighbourhoods are mostly single-family homes built in the post-war decades, with schools and small parks set into the blocks. Flood-control channels run through parts of the city in straight concrete lines.
