Whittier lies in southeastern Los Angeles County, founded in 1887 by Quakers and named after the poet John Greenleaf Whittier. On a map the city is divided between the flat, regular grid of the lower areas and the curving streets that climb into the Puente Hills along its northern edge.
Uptown Whittier, the historic commercial core along Greenleaf Avenue, forms a compact grid of older blocks. Nearby, Whittier College occupies a hillside campus of its own; Richard Nixon studied there before law school. The Whittier Narrows and the San Gabriel River lie to the west, beyond the city's flat western districts.
