Te mapa
Williamsburg, Virginia, served as the capital of the Virginia colony through much of the eighteenth century. From above, its historic plan is still easy to read. Duke of Gloucester Street runs as a straight central axis, with the College of William & Mary at one end and the reconstructed Capitol at the other. Greens and cross streets branch off it.
The College of William & Mary, founded in 1693, is one of the oldest colleges in the United States, and its Wren Building faces the historic street. Much of the old town has been restored as Colonial Williamsburg, a living history museum, and the city forms part of Virginia's Historic Triangle with Jamestown and Yorktown.
A Williamsburg map poster shows a deliberate eighteenth-century plan. The main street runs straight between its two anchors, the Palace Green reaches north toward the Governor's Palace, and newer neighbourhoods and roads spread around the historic core through wooded tidewater land.
This straight central avenue links the college to the Capitol. It is the backbone of the historic town and the strongest line on the poster.
At the western end of the historic street, the college's buildings, lawns and quads form a distinctive area of paths and open green space.
A long green runs north from the main street toward the Governor's Palace, forming a clear cross-axis in the colonial town plan.
