Valley-floor spine
The main road follows the valley, and the rest of the town is strung along it. That gives the map a clear linear axis instead of a central square.

Te mapa
Xiasi lies in the hilly north of Sichuan province, where the Sichuan Basin rises towards the mountains along the Shaanxi and Gansu borders. In this kind of terrain settlements follow the valleys. From above, the town appears as a narrow strip of streets along the valley floor, hemmed in by slopes that carry farm terraces, patches of forest and winding country roads.
Because the ground is uneven, the street pattern doesn't form a neat grid. Roads bend with the contours, lanes branch off towards the hillsides, and the main thoroughfare usually follows the valley itself. On the map this gives Xiasi a long, organic outline, quite unlike the square blocks of cities on the plains further south.
A Xiasi map poster records that relationship between town and terrain. In monochrome, the road network turns into a thin, branching drawing, dense where the valley opens up and sparse where the slopes close in. It is a quiet, graphic portrait of a place most maps show only as a dot in the mountains of northern Sichuan.
The main road follows the valley, and the rest of the town is strung along it. That gives the map a clear linear axis instead of a central square.
Side streets and country roads curve with the hillsides. Across the sheet they form irregular, branching lines rather than a rigid grid.
Past the built-up strip, the map thins out into scattered rural roads and hamlets typical of the uplands in northern Sichuan.
