Xingfeng lies in eastern Gansu, in the hill country near Tianshui where the Loess Plateau breaks into ridges, gullies and narrow valleys. From above, the town is a small, dense patch of streets set into this deeply eroded terrain, with farmland reaching right up to the edges of the built area and villages scattered across the surrounding slopes.
The landscape here has been shaped over a very long time by wind-blown loess soil and the streams that cut into it, producing a pattern of branching valleys that looks almost like a tree on a map.
