Te mapa
Yorii lies in the northwest of Saitama Prefecture, at the point where the Arakawa river leaves the mountains of Chichibu and enters the Kantō plain. From above, the town sits at a clear transition. To the west, forested hills and a narrowing river valley. To the east, flatter land with fields and residential streets. The Arakawa cuts through the middle in a deep, winding channel.
Yorii Station is a meeting point for three railway lines: the JR Hachikō Line, the Tōbu Tōjō Line and the Chichibu Railway, whose tracks converge and diverge across the town. Just south of the river are the remains of Hachigata Castle, a Sengoku-period fortress built on a bluff above the Arakawa. Its earthworks and moats remain visible and it is designated a national historic site.
A Yorii map poster shows the river curving out of the hills, the rail lines crossing the valley, and the modest street grid around the station. It is a well-balanced composition, with mountains on one side, plain on the other and the Arakawa connecting them, which makes it one of the more graphic small-town maps in the Kantō region.
The Arakawa winds out of the Chichibu hills through Yorii. Its curves and steep banks form the strongest natural line on the poster.
The JR, Tōbu and Chichibu lines converge at Yorii Station, and their tracks sweep across the town in long, intersecting arcs.
The castle ruins sit on a bluff by the river. The outline of its grounds is a distinct shape at the edge of the town centre.
