Youchou is a town in the mountains of south-eastern Chongqing, in the Wuling range near the borders of Hunan and Hubei. This is steep, forested country, and settlements follow the valleys where the land is flat enough to build. From above, the town stretches along a river and a main road, with the slopes rising sharply on both sides.
Space is limited, so the streets are compact and run mostly parallel to the valley. Bridges cross the river at a few points, and smaller lanes climb a short way up the hillsides. The region is home to Tujia and Miao communities, and the landscape around the town is a mix of forest, terraces and scattered villages.
