Te mapa
Zaqatala lies in northwestern Azerbaijan, at the foot of the Greater Caucasus near the borders with Georgia and Russia. On a map the town sits where the mountains meet the Alazani valley. Streets slope downward from north to south, and small rivers flowing from the ridges cut across the land on their way to the plain.
The town is known for its nineteenth-century fortress, built during the Russian Empire, and for its old plane trees in the centre. North of the town, the Zaqatala State Nature Reserve protects forests and high mountain country. The region is also known for its hazelnut orchards.
A Zaqatala map poster shows a town with a clear sense of slope and direction. The streets are laid out in a fairly regular pattern, the mountain streams draw thin lines through it, and the high ground to the north is left as open space. It is a calm, structured map of a mountain town.
The town sits where the mountains begin, and the forested ridges rise directly to the north, framing the top of the poster with open space.
The old fortress stands on higher ground in the town, a historic landmark that marks one of the oldest parts of Zaqatala.
Rivers coming down from the Caucasus cross the town and the land around it, drawing fine lines from the ridges toward the Alazani valley.
