Zhendong is a town in the northeastern part of Chongqing Municipality, a region of steep ridges, deep valleys and rivers flowing south toward the Yangtze. Flat land is scarce, so the built-up area follows the terrain. It stretches along a valley or a river instead of spreading out in a grid.
This is typical of settlements across the hills of eastern Sichuan and Chongqing. Towns grow along the few level corridors available, and farmland is cut into terraces on the slopes. On a map, this produces long, narrow street patterns, sharp road bends and small clusters of buildings strung along winding routes into the mountains.
