Te mapa
Zhlobin stands on the Dnieper in the Homyel region of south-eastern Belarus. On the map the river passes the town in broad bends, bordered by meadows and oxbow lakes, while rail lines converge from several directions on the town's junction. The residential districts form a grid of streets and larger apartment blocks between the tracks and the water.
Zhlobin grew as a railway junction in the late nineteenth century, where lines crossing Belarus meet. It is known today for the Belarusian Steel Works, a large metallurgical plant built in the 1980s that is one of the country's main industrial enterprises. The plant shaped much of the town's later growth, including the apartment districts built for its workers.
A Zhlobin map poster brings together three strong elements: the river with its winding floodplain, the long straight lines of the railway and the large rectangular footprint of the steelworks. It reads as an industrial map softened by water and meadows, a combination that looks especially good in the darker styles.
The Dnieper passes the town in wide bends, flanked by low meadows, side channels and oxbow lakes that form a looser, more organic pattern than the streets.
Several lines meet at Zhlobin, and their straight tracks and sidings cut across the map, dividing the town into distinct districts.
The metallurgical plant occupies a large area on the edge of town, its long halls and internal railways forming the biggest regular shapes on the print.
