Zhongchao is in the southeast of Guizhou, in hill country where Dong and Miao communities have lived for centuries. From above, the land is folded and green. Steep ridges run close together, and the narrow valleys between them hold water, fields and settlements. The town takes up one of these valley floors, and its plan is shaped by the stream running through it.
The streets are few and follow the valley instead of forming a grid. A main road carries through traffic. Smaller lanes branch off toward houses, fields and the lower slopes. Around the edges, terraced fields step up the hillsides and give the map a fine, layered texture where the roads stop.
