About this Xingyi map poster
Xingyi is the seat of Qianxinan, the Buyei and Miao autonomous prefecture in the south-west of Guizhou, close to the borders with Yunnan and Guangxi. The city occupies a relatively open basin on the karst plateau. From above, its streets form a compact modern grid, surrounded by farmland and the scattered cones of limestone hills that define the region.
Those hills are the reason many visitors come. Wanfenglin, the so-called forest of ten thousand peaks, lies just outside the city, where hundreds of rounded limestone summits rise from flat fields. On a map the terrain shows as an irregular pattern of gaps between winding roads. That texture is quite unlike the regular blocks of the centre.
