Irrigation canals
Canals and channels run through the surrounding fields. Their long lines and field divisions fill the space around the town with a quiet geometric pattern.

The map
Xo‘jayli Shahri is in the far northwest of Uzbekistan, in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, close to the Amu Darya and a short distance from Nukus. From above, the town is a grid of streets surrounded by irrigated farmland, with canals drawing straight and gently curving lines through the fields. Beyond the farmland, the landscape turns to dry plateau and desert.
Just outside the town is Mizdakhan, an ancient hilltop necropolis and one of the region's best-known historic sites, with mausoleums and burial grounds spanning many centuries. The town also lies near the border with Turkmenistan. Irrigation and changing water levels have shaped the lower Amu Darya delta around it for generations.
A Xo‘jayli Shahri map poster reflects that setting: the regular blocks of the town, the network of canals and farm roads, and the open, unmarked areas where the desert begins. The contrast between dense and empty space gives the map a calm balance. It records a place few people outside Central Asia have ever seen on a map.
Canals and channels run through the surrounding fields. Their long lines and field divisions fill the space around the town with a quiet geometric pattern.
On raised ground outside the town lies the Mizdakhan burial site, an area of mausoleums and ancient ruins that appears on the map as a distinct open space.
The town sits in the lowlands of the Amu Darya delta, where the river, its channels and the farmland shape the terrain well before the streets begin.

Why Xo‘jayli Shahri
For people from Karakalpakstan, Xo‘jayli is a map of home at the edge of the desert. For travellers who came to see Mizdakhan or were on their way into Turkmenistan, it is a reminder of a quieter stop along the way.
Each design can carry your own title, subtitle and date, and you can adjust the coordinates line. Choose from five styles, including Sand, which suits the colours of the desert. Then download the $9 HD files or order a matte print.
