About this Yabu map poster
Yabu is a city in the north of Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, formed in 2004 by merging several towns in the mountainous Tajima region. Most of its area is forested mountain, and settlements occupy the valley floors. On the map, streets and buildings follow rivers in long, narrow ribbons, with empty slopes rising on either side.
The Maruyama River flows through the city and is the main axis for roads and the railway. Side valleys branch off it, each with a thin band of villages and rice fields. There is no single compact centre. Instead, the city is a network of valley communities linked by roads that trace the rivers.
The mountains around Yabu include some of the highest ground in Hyōgo, and the area is known for farming, hot springs and the old mining history of the Tajima region. A Yabu map poster shows a landscape where the terrain decides everything, down to where each street can run.
