The map

About this Yalta map poster

Yalta sits on the southern coast of Crimea, where the mountains come down almost to the water. From above, the town is a crescent pressed against a curved bay. A seafront promenade traces the shoreline, and above it the streets zigzag uphill in tight switchbacks, following the contours rather than any grid. Two small rivers cut down through the town to the sea.

Behind the town the Crimean Mountains close the view to the north, and the ridge of Ai-Petri rises above the coast. That wall of rock shelters the shore from northern winds, which is why Yalta became a resort in the nineteenth century. Villas, sanatoriums and palace parks spread along the coast on either side, joined by winding coastal roads.

Two moments in its history are widely known. Anton Chekhov spent his last years here at the White Dacha, where he wrote some of his late plays. In February 1945 Livadia Palace, just west of the town, hosted the Yalta Conference of Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin. A Yalta map poster shows the coast as it sits between the mountains and the sea.

01

Curved seafront

The promenade follows the arc of the bay in one clean line, with the town's densest blocks packed behind it and the open sea on the other side of the poster.

02

Switchback streets

Above the shore, roads fold back on themselves as they climb the slope. On the map they look like loose loops of thread drawn across the hillside.

03

Coastal palace parks

West of the centre, the estates around Livadia break the street pattern into large green areas with winding paths, a softer texture against the built-up town.

Why Yalta

A map that means something

Yalta tends to stay with people as a summer by the sea: a walk along the embankment, a room with a view of the bay, a trip up the mountain road. The map keeps the shape of that coastline with none of the noise, as clean lines on a wall.

You can set your own title and subtitle, add the date of a trip or a family story, and choose from five styles: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the steep streets especially well.
