The map
Yinchuan is the capital of Ningxia and sits on a flat plain between two strong natural lines. To the west rise the Helan Mountains, a barrier against the desert. To the east runs the Yellow River. Between them, the city spreads out on a broad, regular grid of wide roads and large blocks.
The older city lies to the east, while newer districts extend westward toward the mountains. Irrigation canals, some dating back centuries, cross the plain, and lakes and wetlands appear among the neighbourhoods. On the map, these water bodies make softer, irregular shapes within the straight grid.
At the foot of the Helan Mountains are the Western Xia imperial tombs, from the kingdom that had its capital here almost a thousand years ago. The combination of river, mountains and canals has earned the area a reputation as a fertile region on the edge of the desert. A Yinchuan map poster shows a city laid out between these natural edges.
The Yellow River flows past the east side of the city. Its wide channel and floodplain form a clear natural boundary on the map.
Numerous lakes and wetlands appear within and around the city, fed by irrigation canals. Their irregular outlines contrast with the straight streets.
Yinchuan's newer districts run on a broad, orderly grid of wide avenues, making large, uniform blocks from east to west.
