The map
Yūsuf aṣ-Ṣiddīq lies in the Faiyum Governorate, in the large natural depression west of the Nile valley. From above the land is intensely farmed and divided by irrigation canals. Villages and field roads follow those channels closely, so the map is a web of water and small plots rather than a single town grid.
The name honours the prophet Joseph, known in Arabic as Yusuf. Faiyum's main water source, the Bahr Yusuf canal, is also linked by tradition to him. For thousands of years water from the Nile has been carried into the depression through this system, which made the Faiyum one of Egypt's most fertile farming regions.
A Yūsuf aṣ-Ṣiddīq map poster shows the fine pattern of canals, fields and villages that characterises the Faiyum. The waterways form curving lines, and the farm plots form a close texture between them. Toward the desert edge, the lines thin out. It is a map of a place shaped entirely by water.
Canals and drainage channels divide the land into small plots, forming the main structure of the map and connecting the villages across the district.
Settlements grow in dense clusters along canals and field roads, creating small knots of streets within the wider agricultural landscape.
Beyond the cultivated land, the Faiyum depression meets the desert. The road and canal network ends, and the print opens into empty space.
