The map

About this Zaječar map poster

Zaječar lies in eastern Serbia, close to the Bulgarian border, in a valley where two rivers, the Beli Timok and the Crni Timok, join to form the Veliki Timok. The town centre is spread across the low ground between the rivers, and residential streets climb the surrounding hills. Farmland and vineyards cover the slopes beyond.

A short distance west is Gamzigrad, where the remains of Felix Romuliana, a late Roman imperial palace built for the emperor Galerius, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town itself is known in Serbia for Gitarijada, a long-running rock festival, and for its local brewery.

A Zaječar map poster is built around the meeting of the rivers. Their meandering lines converge near the centre, bridges cross them at intervals, and the street pattern works around their bends. In black and white the rivers stand out as flowing strokes, with the town's denser blocks gathered where the valleys meet.

Confluence of the Timok

The Beli and Crni Timok join near the town to form the Veliki Timok, and their meeting point is the natural centre of the map.

02

Valley centre

The main streets and squares lie on the flat ground between the rivers, where the town is at its densest.

03

Hillside edges

Residential streets and vineyards climb the surrounding hills, and roads wind up the slopes in curves that soften the edges of the plan.
