The map
Zelino is a municipality in the Polog valley of northwestern North Macedonia, between Tetovo and Skopje. It is made up of a group of villages rather than a single town. On the map they appear as separate clusters of streets scattered across the plain and the surrounding higher ground, joined by local roads.
The Vardar winds across the lowland nearby, and the motorway linking Tetovo with the capital cuts a long straight line through the area. Between them lie narrow strips of fields, orchards and irrigation ditches. This farmed landscape gives the map a fine, even texture, broken by the compact village centres.
Most residents of the municipality are Albanian, and many families have relatives working elsewhere in Europe, a pattern common across Polog. A Zelino map poster serves as a reminder of a particular landscape: flat, fertile and dotted with villages that sit a short drive from both Tetovo and Skopje.
The motorway between Tetovo and Skopje crosses the municipality in a long, clean stroke. It is the most geometric element on the map and a clear orientation line.
Each village forms its own knot of streets, separated from the next by fields. Together they create a scattered pattern rather than one continuous town.
Long, narrow agricultural plots cover the plain. Their parallel boundaries give the lowland an even texture that sets off the villages and roads.
