Delta waterways
Rivers, canals and fish ponds cover much of the land, so water lines run across the whole poster and give the city an intricate, finely drawn texture.

The map
Zhongshan lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta, on low land laced with rivers, canals and fish ponds. From above, the map is a fine mesh of water channels and roads, with built-up areas scattered across the flat terrain. The city is unusual in having no districts, only towns and subdistricts, so its settled areas read as many separate patches.
The historic centre, Shiqi, sits on the Qijiang River, and its older streets still show the arcaded shophouse pattern typical of the delta. South of the centre the land rises into forested hills, and to the east the wide estuary of the Pearl River forms the edge of the map, facing Shenzhen across the water.
The city is named after Sun Yat-sen, whose birthplace in the village of Cuiheng lies within its boundaries. A Zhongshan map poster presents the city as it is on the ground: a network of towns and waterways rather than one centre, held together by highways and the rivers that have always defined the delta.
Rivers, canals and fish ponds cover much of the land, so water lines run across the whole poster and give the city an intricate, finely drawn texture.
The historic core along the Qijiang River, with narrow streets and arcaded shophouses, forms the densest and oldest part of the map.
The broad estuary marks the eastern edge of the city, a wide expanse of open water facing Shenzhen across the delta.
