The map
Aalen lies in the valley of the Kocher, on the eastern edge of the Swabian Jura. From above, the town is shaped by that valley: the river and railway run through the lowest ground, the historic centre sits close to them, and residential streets climb the slopes on both sides before giving way to forest and upland fields.
The old town was once a Free Imperial City, and its compact outline is still readable on a map as a small knot of streets set apart from the wider, later neighbourhoods. Main roads leave the valley toward Stuttgart, Ulm and Nuremberg, and the surrounding hills keep the built area long rather than round.
An Aalen map poster also carries a much older layer. The Romans built a large cavalry fort here on the Raetian Limes, the frontier of their empire, and the site is now home to the Limesmuseum. On a black-and-white print, the result is a town defined by river, slope and a history that reaches back almost two thousand years.

The historic centre of the former Free Imperial City appears as a small, dense cluster of lanes set inside the wider modern street network.
Aalen stands on the line of the Raetian Limes, and the site of its Roman cavalry fort is marked today by the Limesmuseum.
