Aarau is the capital of the canton of Aargau, in northern Switzerland, on the River Aare at the foot of the Jura hills. The old town sits on a rocky rise above the river. On the map, it forms a dense, nearly rectangular block of narrow lanes, and newer neighbourhoods spread out on both banks, joined by bridges.
The old town is known for its painted roof eaves, and Aarau is sometimes called the town of beautiful gables. The city has a notable place in Swiss history: in 1798 it served briefly as the first capital of the Helvetic Republic. Albert Einstein attended the cantonal school here before going on to study in Zurich.
