The map
Aboka is a town in the Sassandra-Marahoué district of central-western Ivory Coast, in the country's cocoa-growing belt. The map is simple and green in reality, though it appears here in black and white. A compact settlement sits at the meeting of local roads, and the surrounding land is divided into plantations, fields and patches of forest.
The streets follow a modest grid near the centre and become looser at the edges, where compounds and paths lead to the farms. Roads connect Aboka with nearby towns and the regional centres, forming the main lines of the composition. Small streams and lowland areas add some irregular shapes to the surrounding landscape.
An Aboka map poster shows a town that belongs to Ivory Coast's agricultural heartland, which has made the country one of the world's largest cocoa producers. It is a plain, honest portrait of a small place, meaningful to those who were born there or have family in the region.
The town centre forms a small, fairly regular grid. On the poster it reads as a dense focal point in the middle of open countryside.
Roads run out from the town toward neighbouring settlements. They create the main axes of the composition and show how Aboka fits into the regional network.
Cocoa and other crops fill the land around the town. On the map this appears as open space broken by tracks and streams, giving the print a calm frame.
