The map
Abū an Numrus lies south of Giza on the west side of the Nile, in the narrow strip of cultivated land between the river and the desert. On the map, it is a dense town surrounded by small fields and irrigation channels. Villages stretch along the roads, and the sprawl of greater Cairo approaches from the north.
The land is almost completely flat, and it is divided by canals and field boundaries into a fine, irregular mosaic. Roads and a railway run north to south, parallel to the river. To the west, the green land stops abruptly at the desert plateau, where the lines of the map end and the sand begins.
This stretch of the west bank belongs to the old Memphis region, the heart of ancient Egypt, and the desert edge above it holds ancient burial grounds. An Abū an Numrus map poster shows a timeless Nile pattern of river, farmland, villages and desert, laid out in clear parallel bands from east to west.
Irrigation canals branch across the farmland around the town. They create delicate, winding lines between field plots.
To the west, the cultivated land ends sharply at the desert. On the map, the dense texture gives way to empty space in a clear line.
The main roads and railway follow the river valley. They run parallel through the frame and tie the town to Giza and Cairo.
