The map
Akkol’ lies in the Aqmola region of northern Kazakhstan, in open steppe north of the capital. Its name means white lake, and a lake lies beside the town, forming the largest natural feature on its map. The streets are laid out in a broad, regular grid typical of towns planned in the region, with wide blocks and generous spacing.
Around the town, the steppe extends in every direction, broken by fields, shallow lakes and the lines of roads and railways. The edge of the built-up area is sharp, with long straight streets ending abruptly in open land. The lakeshore gives one side of the town a soft, irregular boundary against the ordered grid.
An Akkol’ map poster sets the grid of streets against the calm shape of the lake. With little relief and few curves, the composition relies on proportion and space, which suits the minimal black-and-white style well. It is a restrained map for those who know the wide horizons of northern Kazakhstan.
The lake beside the town, which gives Akkol’ its name, appears as a large open shape against the streets and is the most distinctive feature on the poster.
Wide, straight streets and large blocks form an orderly grid, making the town's plan easy to read from above.
Beyond the last streets, the flat steppe stretches out with fields, roads and a railway line, framing the town with broad empty space.
