The map
Al ‘Ayyāţ lies in Giza governorate, south of Cairo, in the stretch of the Nile valley where the cultivated land narrows to a thin green corridor. From above, the geography is stark: the river on one side, farmland and villages along the valley floor, and the pale, empty desert beginning abruptly at its edge.
The town grew along the main routes that follow the valley, and a railway runs through the area toward Upper Egypt. Its streets are dense near the centre and loosen toward the fields. Canals drawn from the Nile cut across the farmland in long lines, feeding the crops that make this strip so productive.
An Al ‘Ayyāţ map poster captures the essential structure of Egypt in a single frame: a line of water, a band of life along it, and wide empty space beyond. In monochrome, the contrast between the dense valley and the blank desert makes for a striking and unusual composition, quite unlike a typical city map.
The river runs along the valley near the town, forming a broad, calm band that anchors the poster and explains the shape of everything else on the map.
A railway line runs through the area toward Upper Egypt, drawing a straight line parallel to the river and the main road along the valley.
Toward the edge of the valley, the map falls silent. The sudden transition from dense fields and villages to open desert gives the print its most dramatic boundary.

Why Al ‘Ayyāţ
Al ‘Ayyāţ is home to families who have farmed this stretch of the valley for generations, and to many who now live in Cairo or abroad. A map of the town connects them to the river and the fields in a form that suits a contemporary home.
Use the name as written here or in your own spelling, add a subtitle and keep the coordinates line. Choose from five styles, including Sand, which echoes the desert light. The $9 HD files come in six sizes, and printed posters ship from partners in 30+ countries.
