The map
Al Fqih Ben Çalah stands on the Tadla plain in central Morocco, north-west of Beni Mellal. The land here is flat and heavily cultivated, fed by an irrigation network drawn from the Oum Er-Rbia basin. On a map the town appears as a compact block of streets surrounded by a geometric field system, with canals and farm tracks running in long parallel lines.
Within the town the layout is mostly regular: straight avenues, rectangular residential blocks and newer districts added at the edges as the population grew. There are no rivers or coastlines to interrupt the pattern, so the character of the map comes from the interplay between the urban grid and the surrounding agricultural parcels that press right up against it.
The town is widely known in Morocco for the many residents who have emigrated, especially to Italy, and for the close ties they keep with home. An Al Fqih Ben Çalah map poster is often chosen by that diaspora, a clear picture of the place they return to in summer and describe to children born abroad.
Canals and farm roads divide the plain into long strips and rectangles, a surveyor's pattern that surrounds the town on every side and fills the outer parts of the poster.
The streets of the centre run mostly at right angles, forming a tidy mesh of blocks that reads cleanly at every print size.
Newer neighbourhoods extend outward into former fields, so the boundary between built area and farmland appears as a soft, uneven line rather than a firm edge.
