The map
Al Ḩazm is the administrative centre of Al Jawf Governorate in northern Yemen. The region lies on the edge of the great desert interior, and the map reflects that setting. The town is relatively compact, with streets and buildings concentrated around its main roads, and it is surrounded by broad open ground where the land is dry and settlement is sparse.
Al Jawf is a region of deep history. In antiquity it was home to South Arabian city-states that were part of the incense trade along caravan routes, and remains of ancient settlements survive in the wider area. Today the landscape combines desert, seasonal wadis and patches of cultivation where water allows.
An Al Ḩazm map poster presents the town with the same care given to any capital, showing how its street pattern sits within a vast, open landscape. For people from the region, including those living far from home, it is a way to keep the shape of a familiar place close at hand.
Buildings and streets gather along the main routes, creating a concentrated centre that stands out clearly against the surrounding open terrain.
Wide areas of dry, unbuilt land surround the town, giving the map generous empty space and a strong, simple composition.
Main roads lead out across the plain toward other towns of the governorate, drawing long lines that tie the town to its region.
